Although the Valdosta State Blazers lost on Saturday night to Newberry College, some history was made at Bazemore-Hyder Stadium that was positive.
 Senior wide receiver Cedric Jones moved up in the VSU record books on Saturday night with his four catches and his one touchdown reception. The four catches moved Jones into third on VSU’s all time receptions list and fourth on the Gulf South Conference receptions list. The receiving touchdown was the 20th of Jones’ career and ties him with Rodney Brown for seventh on VSU’s all-time list.
 “The records mean a lot to me,” Jones said. “The main focus right now though is just winning games.”
 Heading into the Blazers next game, which is scheduled for Saturday Sept. 12th against Southern Arkansas, Jones will only needsix more receptions to move into second on the school’s all-time receiving list, and only needs 21 more yards to move into third on VSU’s all-time receiving yards list.
 “When I came to school here at Valdosta, I came here with goals just like everybody else and I am excited that I have had the opportunity to go after them,” Jones said.
 The likelihood that Jones will break these records is very good. Jones seems to have built great chemistry with both quarterbacks in Kellen Lewis and Russ Callaway.
 “He is a playmaker,” Lewis said. “He can turn a small play into something like 80 yards and a touchdown.”
 Jones is coming off a down season where he only had 57 receptions for 551 yards in 2008 for the Blazers. However in Jones’ sophomore year at VSU he broke out for 102 catches for 1, 171 yards. Jones only needs 1,033 yards to become the schools’ all-time leading receiver in yards.
