Gunter named interim VPAA

Dr. Phillip Gunter, Dean of the Dewar College of Education, has been selected by President Patrick Schloss to replace Dr. Louis Levy as the vice president of Academic Affairs (VPAA), serving as the interim provost until a permanent Vice President is chosen.
Starting Jan. 1, Dr. Gunter will leave his position as Dean of the Dewar College of Education to take on his new six-month role.
No one has yet been selected to replace Gunter as the dean of the Dewar College of Education. “We hope to have Dr. Schloss have someone selected by the end of the week,”Gunter, said.
Upon Dr. Levy’s retirement, Gunter will serve the duties of being the university’s chief academic officer and is responsible for overseeing all academic operations, including five colleges, the Graduate School, the Division of Social Work, and Library and Information Science, as well as various administrative units.   Gunter feels his previous work as the Dean of the Dewar College of Education has prepared him with the necessary qualities for his upcoming role as the interim provost.
Dr.Schloss has appointed Dr. Jay Rickman, history professor and executive secretary of the Faculty Senate, to chair the search for a permanent VPAA. “Dr. Schloss hopes to have the permanent position of VPAA filled by July 1,” Gunter , said.
The position for the permanent seat as the VPPA has not been publicized or advertised and therefore has yet to be applied for. “It is too early to tell,” said Gunter, when asked whether he planned on applying for the permanent position.
