SGA still with over $25,000 in budget

SGA heard a proposal for a new community service bill, passed a dress code bill, heard updates on their budget, and discussed plans for the upcoming Outreach cookout during their most recent meeting on April 6.
Comptroller Morgan Alexander presented the senate with the most recent budget report. Changes since the last budget report include money taken out for the Outreach cookout, election ads, the Reach for Recruitment event, the Delta Sigma event, shirts, and money spent on the upcoming comedy show, leaving SGA with a remaining balance of $26,516.66. This balance is still subject to change.
Senators Jakarrea Mustaf and Deborah Fung-a-wing presented the dress code bill. The bill stated that all senators will be expected to wear their white button-down shirt and slacks to meetings that fall on the first Monday of the month. On all other Mondays, the bill stated senators must wear either their black or white SGA shirt with dark jeans.
A few amendments were proposed, but none were approved and the bill was eventually passed without any changes.
Next, Senators Mustaf and Fung-a-wing presented a community service bill that requires every senator to give at least 10 hours of community service, five of which must be through SGA. The bill also stated that any senator who did not meet this requirement would be subject to an absence.
The senate, including the community service committee head, Senator Jaquita Graham, questioned the completion of the bill and suggested that the senators withdraw the bill and work on it more. The two senators agreed and a new community service bill will be discussed in the next meeting.
The senate also discussed final plans for the upcoming Outreach cookout to be held on the front lawn April 8, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The cookout will include hot wing and hot dog eating contests as well as games of musical chairs. Prizes will include an i-Pod nano, t-shirts and gift cards from the bookstore.
During committee reports, the elections committee reminded the senate that campaigning had begun that day and will end on Apr. 17.
The Academics committee announced plans to do something about Odum Library cutting their hours for finals week, in order to allow students more access to the library.
SGA meetings are open to students and faculty and are held every Monday at 8 p.m. in Meeting Room 1 of the Student Union.
