SGA appropriates funds

The SGA Senate heard a proposal from Alpha Phi Omega and executive and committee reports in their meeting on Monday, April 19. The senate also attempted once again to pass a community service bill.
Samuel Logan, a representative from Alpha Phi Omega, presented the organization’s request for SGA to help fund a movie night for Child Abuse Prevention and Awareness Week. Alpha Phi Omega will show the film “Precious” in room 150 of Powell Hall West on Thursday April 29 at 7:25 p.m. Other events the organization is hosting include a Forum on Child Abuse at 5:25 p.m. on April 29 in the Student Union theater and a field day at S.L. Mason Elementary school on Friday April 30 from 12:15 to 3 p.m.
Logan asked SGA to appropriate the funds for the movie night, which will include pizza and drinks. After some discussion, the senate voted to give Alpha Phi Omega $499 for the event, with the understanding that the organization will obtain refreshments through Sodexo.
During the executive reports, President Kelli Cody told the senate about the final SAC conference that she attended. While other schools sent both their old and new SGA presidents, VSU was not able to do so because elections were not finished at the time.
Next, Secretary Avraye Henry reminded the senate of the second Provost interview with candidate Dr. David Glassman, which was held yesterday in the UC Dogwood Room.
During committee reports, the University Conservation Committee announced plans to conduct a college safety presentation for incoming freshmen.
Jaquita Graham, head of the community service committee, reminded the senate of the importance of the upcoming Relay for Life event on Friday April 23.
Senators Deborah Fung-a-wing and Jakerrea Mustaf were scheduled to present a new community service bill, but due to technical difficulties, the bill was once again tabled.
SGA meetings are held every Monday at 8 p.m. in Meeting Room 1 of the Student Union and are open to all students and faculty.
