VSU NAACP grabs the attention of the National headquarters

VSU’s NAACP branch will be featured on the National NAACP website for their growth and heavy involvement in campus issues.

The news was delivered to VSU’s NAACP by the communications department of the National NAACP. The branch will be featured on the website’s Youth and College Division.

“They said they have chosen us among a few colleges in the country to follow for the remainder of the year,” NAACP president DeAndre Jones said.

The Youth and College Division’s main focus is to help young people strive to reach their full potential, uniting across the country participating in social justice activism and addressing issues at the local, state and national level.

VSU’s division is broken down into committees that focus on education, political action, health and economic and employment empowerment, all of which offer community service and internship opportunities for everyone involved.

VSU’s NAACP was active in the petitioning for the release of Troy Anthony Davis, a death row inmate in Savannah. The group is also holding voter registrations from Sept. 21 through 28 on the Pedestrian
Mall at noon. Last year they were able to register 200 students to vote.

Valencia Williams, NAACP Press and Publicity Committee Chairman has always been a big advocate for civil rights and being a part of this organization has given her the ability to help out people in their struggle and to stand up for what’s right.

One of the advisors’ for the NAACP, Dr. Calvin Walker Associate African-American studies professor said in an interview how the organization was heavily involved in the community last year and the organization is focused on trying to make a difference in people’s lives.

Last year they were the only organization on campus to host informational forums about the new HOPE changes and how it would affect students.

This year the organization is planning several campus and community events, including “Economic empowerment: a resume workshop,” a political debate to be scheduled for October, a 5k run and many more. Next Thursday, NAACP will hold an “It’s all about Wealth” forum to discuss financial issues.

“There’s nothing like being surrounded by students who care about issues and this organization allows that conversation to happen.” Jones said.

NAACP also holds member socials and recognizes their members for all their hard work.

“It’s a great organization to get involved in,” Quillan Lester, NAACP vice president, said. “Everyone is treated fairly and it’s a chance to help out in the community.”

VSU’s chapter of NAACP has also been nominated for an award for the state of Georgia NAACP Convention, which will take place at the end of the month.

“Overall it feels good to be recognized and we hope we can continue our standards of works and events.” Jones said.

Students can visit the Student Union Ballroom Thursday at 7 p.m. for the NAACP general meetings; visit the organization’s website at www.vsunaacp.blogspot.com, or the website on which the chapter will be featured at http://www.naacpconnect.org/content/post/valdosta-state-university-back-in-session.
