VSU Theatre presents “The State Fair”

VSU’s Theatre and Dance will premiere “The State Fair” at 7:30 p.m. tonight in Sawyer Theatre in the Fine Arts Building.

The musical, once debuted as a play on Broadway in 1996, is based on the book by Louis Mattioli. The story takes place in Des Moines, Iowa in 1946, following the Frake family as they enjoy a three day event at the Iowa State Fair.

The parents, Abel and Melissa, show their competitive spirit and hope to win blue ribbons, while their children, Margy and Wayne, hope to spark summer romances.

Eric Brandt Nielsen, choreographer and VSU Dance Program coordinator said the dance pieces “Our State Fair,” “All I Owe Iowa” and “It’s a Grand Night for Singing” are major ensemble numbers.

Principal dances include “Isn‘t It Kind of Fun,” “You Never had it So Good,” “That’s the Way It Happens” and “The Man I Used to Be.”

“Besides some delightful hoe-down music, this show provides great swing era songs and dances that give much more depth to the musical than what you would imagine from the title,” said Nielsen.

Jacque Wheeler, director, as well as professor and VSU Theatre and Dance Area head, says the play is set in a simpler time.

“There was no high tech equipment and a $5 bet was a significant investment,” Wheeler said. “But people fall in love whether it’s 1946 or 2012.  There is a magic at the fair riding on the Ferris wheel, holding a blue balloon or eating cotton candy.”

The show will also play Friday at 7 p.m., Sunday at 3 p.m., and April 2-4 at 7:30 p.m.

Tickets are $15 for adults, $10 for children and non-VSU students, $12 for senior citizens and free for VSU students with identification.

Advance tickets can be purchased by phone (229)333-5973.
