CMVSU brings chivalry to campus

The Collegiate Men of VSU are continuing to strive toward moral excellence and changing the attitudes of young men.

“We specialize in taking young males, and transforming them into supportive men by building a family of men that are like minded in making a way to succeed,” Secretary Samuel Logan, a senior mass-media major, said.

According to Logan, the idea of the organization came from individuals who were tired of hearing about the lack of chivalry men showed towards women and what it takes to be a fine young man. Those individuals are now a part of the executive board.

“We got tired of hearing about how chivalry is dead and how there aren’t any good men in the world,” Logan said. “Instead, we decided to come together to not only show VSU that good men still exist, but to also help other men around campus become the successful men they can be– not only in their future, but right now.”

The group consisted of 45 young men starting in May. Since then there has been a number of students looking into the program.

“We now have an extra 80 interested men on campus,” Logan said.

So what’s the organization doing with their time? They have set up multiple events both inside and outside the Valdosta campus including a silent auction in October, a “Becoming a Better Business Man Forum” and the once- a -semester event CMVSU is known for– the “Women’s Appreciation Dinner”.

“The Women’s Appreciation Dinner serves about 150 to 200 women on campus,” Logan said. “The men of CMVSU serve dinner to the women like a restaurant and cater to the ladies and their needs for the evening.”

CMVSU also serves the community of Valdosta. The group of young men does a variety of community service in places such as Second Harvest Food Bank by helping local teens at Valdosta High School.

Resume building and interview skill workshops held within the organization help prepare the young men for life outside of college.

“We help each other out in various ways,” Logan said. “We have weekly study sessions that members are required to attend to make sure grades stay above the required 2.5 GPA to be a member.”

With the motivational for successful young men, VSU will experience the progress that CMVSU has strived for.
