Shortly after 10 a.m. today, Dr. Bill McKinney, VSU president, informed University employees of former VSU president Dr. Hugh C. Bailey’s death via email. “It is with great sadness that I inform the Valdosta State University family of the death of Dr. Hugh C. Bailey, sixth president of Valdosta State,” the email read. “Serving from 1978-2001, Dr. Bailey's legacy on our campus is apparent not only in its physical structure, but also in its spirit of strong community that we all value so highly.”

Update (Oct. 8): Dr. Bailey’s family will hold visitation Monday, Oct. 8 from 6-8 p.m. at Carson McLane Funeral Home at 2215 N. Patterson Street in Valdosta. Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 10 at Christ Episcopal Church.

Dr. Bailey is survived by his wife Joan Bailey as well as daughters Debbie and Laura.
