‘Black History’ unveils on campus

Black Student League along with NAACP and NPHC will host “It’s Showtime at the Apollo,” a variety show that aims to showcase student talents, today at 7:30 p.m. in the Student Union theater.

The showcase is a continuation of Black History Week 2013, and will host an array of talent from steppers, impersonations, and singers in an effort to draw more awareness.

The Black History Week 2013 planning committee has worked on this show since last semester and has incorporated their findings from the archives in Odum Library in all of their events.

The planning committee chose the name to refer to the historic New York Theater and television show due to its incorporation of a timeline of African American achievements at VSU.

BSL collaborated with NAACP, NPHC and other organizations for creative input and suggestions for this week full of events that could not rely on one individual group.

BSL event coordinator and junior mass media major, Micah Howell, is excited to see students learn about VSU’s history and its integration with black history.

“I expect this event to be the biggest of our week and semester,” he said. “Black Student League works very hard to have successful and beneficial programs for students and I think this will be the one we talk about for years to come.”

The week began with a Sunday service at New Life Ministries followed by a quiz bowl on Monday, a unity dinner and candlelight vigil on Tuesday and a performance from The American Spiritual Ensemble on Wednesday.

An All Black Affair will be hosted tomorrow in the Student Union Ballrooms B & C from 7 p.m. until 10 p.m.

Black History Week 2013 will conclude on Saturday with two community service events.

A Day of Service will be held at Second Harvest Food Bank from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Kid’s Black History Day will follow at the Boys & Girls Club on W. North Street from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m.
