PopAddict: Annual Grammy Awards full of stars

Written by Anthony Pope

Hello World—Anthony here wrapping up all the celebrity news that had us talking this past week.

This week, music’s shining stars put on their best prom dresses and penguin suits to gather at the fifty-fifth annual Grammy Awards.

Before the festivities kicked off, the ceremony was shrouded in controversy when CBS sent an email to all attendees and performers with a detailed dress code to abide by.

In the email sent days before the award show, CBS, in an unintentionally hilarious way, encourages attendees to cover their genital regions and to be sure there isn’t any “puffy” bare skin being exposed.

My guess is that this was CBS’ attempt at avoiding another Nipplegate (No, we haven’t forgotten, Janet) from happening on live TV.

Dress code intact, celebrities hit the red carpet in their finest duds. I’m not sure if it was because normal half-naked singers such as Lady Gaga and Nicki Minaj chose to skip the ceremony or if people were still mourning Whitney, but for the most part everyone was dressed very demurely.

Well everyone except Jennifer Lopez, who showed up to the ceremony with a slit half way up to her hoo-ha. This isn’t 1999 anymore JLo, we get it, you have a nice body for a 45-year-old lady. Have several seats.

One of the show’s highlights included the return of everyone’s favorite boy-bander turned smooth crooner, Justin Timberlake, after a six-year hiatus from music.

Accompanied by Jay-Z, Timberlake performed his latest single “Suit & Tie,” followed by a new song titled “Pusher Love Girl.”

I’m glad JT finally decided to return to music. While his acting was okay, I don’t think anyone could stand to see him in another romantic comedy.

It was apparent that Grammy voters were favoring a much younger generation this year, with awards being handed out to British rockers Mumford & Sons, indie rock group Fun and newly outed R&B singer Frank Ocean.

Speaking of R&B’s new it boy, not only did Ocean take home an award for Best Urban Contemporary Album, he also performed in one of the most talked about performances of the night.

Ocean performed “Forrest Gump” off of his album “Channel Orange.” While he crooned and even whistled through the song, it was apparent that something was off.

Maybe it was nerves or having Chris Brown (who he got into a physical altercation with weeks earlier) sitting right in front of him, but Ocean’s performance left much to be desired.

Fans immediately took to Twitter to voice their displeasure with Ocean’s performance with one fan tweeting “Maybe Chris Brown has Frank shook ‘cause this performance is sh*t.”

Well darn, these Breezy stans go hard, don’t they?

With an array of hit performances and always colorful emcee LL Cool J, this year’s show was a much need boost from the somber show last year in the wake of Whitney Houston’s passing.

At the end of the day Adele wore an ugly dress, young people proved that they can still make really good music and Justin Timberlake came back onto the music scene in good fashion.

We’ll have to wait and see how next year’s show tops this one.

As always be sure to tune into Pop Addict next week to catch up with all the latest celebrity news.
