The Hookah Scene in Valdosta

Despite what everyone believes about the college party scene, it really isn’t as scandalous as the movies make it seem. Of course clubbing and bar-hopping is a fun way to start off and celebrate another conquered academic week, but it seems that the hookah scene has really taken off.

Of course to each his own, and every social scene isn’t for everyone. But if you are like me, and are not so into humid, dark rooms and bumping into sweaty shoulders on dance floors, then the hookah scene may be for you.

I’ve been to two hookah lounges in Valdosta and both are quite similar. Lots of open space, several couches and lounge chairs, artwork on the walls and of course, hookahs. If you ask me, sitting in a circle of bean bag chairs with my friends, laughing and enjoying conversation seems a lot safer and inexpensive then walking around a hot club in high heels. But again, to each his own.

Personally, I would not consider myself a “smoker”. It is not an every day or even an every week thing for me. It is, however, my go to when I’m looking to relax and have fun at the same time. Hookah bars really promote a great, relaxing night out with your friends and can actually be a bonding experience. There is soft music, dimmed lights, comfortable seating and great conversation waiting for each customer to enjoy.

Beware the ides of smoking hookah, though. It isn’t all so glamorous. Hookah smoke contains a lot of the same harmful toxins that cigarette smoke contains. It has also been associated with lung cancer, respiratory illness, low birth weight, and periodontal disease. According to a report from World Health Organization, smoking in a hookah lounge could expose smokers to more smoke over a longer period of time than when smoking a cigarette.

I feel that every thing is better in moderation. I would not recommend one to smoke hookah every day. I think it’s safe to say that all smoking is bad for you. For those of us who do thoroughly enjoy this, keep in mind the risks that come along with doing it too much. Get out, enjoy hookah, and have a good time! Just remember to be a responsible smoker.

Blazers, I would recommend either the Smokin’ Aces or the Vapor Lounge, which is located in walking distance from our very own student union. You won’t spend more than 10 bucks to smoke once and the staff is always very friendly and helpful at both places. Grab a friend and head out for a night you won’t regret!
