Volleyball sweeps MC, UWA on way to undefeated home record

The Blazers had back-to-back wins to remain undefeated at The Complex.

This weekend, VSU (21-7, 16-4) did not drop a single game while defeating Mississippi College (5-25, 0-20) on Friday and West Alabama (9-21, 7-13) on Saturday.

Coming into the weekend, head coach Mike Swan and his team had three straight Gulf South Conference wins and a few of his Blazers had standout performances and were honored for them.

Freshman, Lea Jaklen, and senior Destiny Berry, were named GSC Student Athlete of the Week.

And during this weekend, other seniors were honored by the VSU volleyball team for Senior Day: Ashley Lala, Brittany Smith and Jenna Kirkwood.

Kirkwood had 21 kills on the Tigers Saturday.

“My whole family was here,” Kirkwood said. “It might be the last time they see me play. I wanted to do the best I could.”

Kirkwood’s teammate Jessica Codato, a junior, set her up nicely for those kills. Codato finished with 35 assists.

This season each senior has played a vital part to the team’s success.

“Today was one of Jenna’s better performances all year,” Swan said. “And Destiny was solid again offensively and defensively. That’s the way we like for them to go out.”

The Blazers’ chemistry was fluent as they sent piercing spikes that would stab the Tigers’ side.

It’s not just the seniors making plays for VSU.

“We have four seniors, some juniors that are stepping up and some freshmen that have contributed,” Swan said.
