VSU Mourns the Loss of Dr. Bobbie Ticknor

VSU has issued a statement mourning the sudden death of Dr. Bobbie Ticknor, a criminal justice professor and active member of VSU’s community. She is survived by her husband Michael, as well as her daughter, Amanda Gayer, her son-in-law, Wyatt, and her grandchildren, Aria and Ivan.

Dr. Ticknor has been with VSU for 10 years, serving as an assistant professor until she was promoted to a full professor in July 2024. Before this, she worked as a professional software developer.

Ticknor’s research included an innovative connection between criminal justice and technological advancements. She published a revolutionary book on the use of virtual reality in rehabilitation work in 2011 titled “Virtual Reality and the Criminal Justice System: Exploring the Possibilities for Correctional Rehabilitation,” and applied this research in 2013 when she led a VR treatment group. She also created VSU’s VR lab, as well as the on-campus Walking Trail System.

She was a dedicated professor at VSU, and a beloved friend both on and off-campus. Her work for the Blazer Pantry and Closet was recognized in spring when VSU’s Office of Career Opportunities and Volunteer Services named the Dr. Bobbie B. Ticknor Blazer Pantry and Closet Champion Award after her.

Her celebration of life is to be hosted in the University Center’s Magnolia Room on Wednesday, October 9, at 6:00 PM. Her family has requested that instead of bringing flowers, donations be made to either the Blazer Pantry and Closet or The Haven.
