The Blazers returned from their Bye week with a dominant 52-0 over the Chowan Hawks. This win marked the third time that the Blazers have shutout a team this year, which is a new school record.
This was the fourth time this year that the Blazers have not allowed a touchdown. The win improved the Blazers to 8-0 on the season and sophomore kicker McCall Bennett became the first women to kick and make an extra point in a Gulf South Conference game.
Despite the games many highlights and the final score indicated a blowout, the win did not come easy.
The Blazers were held scoreless in the first quarter for the season and saw a notable streak snapped as senior quarterback Sammy Edwards threw an interception for first time in 190 attempts. From the second quarter, the Blazers offense was in full control as they bullied the Hawks into submission.
The Blazers had another great game from Edwards despite the interception, as he had 225 yards passing and two touchdowns. But the stars of the game were the playoff running backs, Blake Hester and Alfonso Franklin, who both dominated on the ground as Hester had 123 rushing yards and three rushing touchdowns while Franklin had 117 rushing and a touchdown.
The Blazers had five rushing touchdowns on the day and went along with 323 rushing yards.
Head Coach Tremaine Jackson spoke to the media after the game about how they were able to overcome the slow game.
“We had to realize that we need to play our game we know what we are capable of,” said Jackson.
The Blazers are set for a huge Gulf South Conference clash next week as they travel to take on the Delta State Statesmen in Cleveland Mississippi on Saturday Nov.9. Meanwhile for the Chowan Hawks they will fall to 2-6 on the season and they will take on the Erskine Flying Fleet next week on the same day.
