LeBron James joining the Philadelphia 76ers may have been unexpected, but it could be exactly what both sides need.

At 41 years old, James is no longer expected to carry a team by himself. In Philadelphia, he will not have to.

The Sixers already have proven scoring options in Tyrese Maxey, Jaylen Brown and Joel Embiid, giving James an opportunity to focus more on facilitating and making his teammates better. 

James showed last season that he can still make an impact.

With the Los Angeles Lakers, he averaged 20.9 points, 7.2 assists and 6.1 rebounds while shooting 51.5% from the field. His ability to pass and control an offense remains one of his biggest strengths. 

That could be valuable for Maxey and Brown. Philadelphia already has players capable of putting up points, but adding one of the best passers in NBA history gives those scorers another way to get quality opportunities.

James also brings championship experience to a franchise still searching for its first NBA title since 1983. 

There are risks. James is approaching his 42nd birthday, while Embiid’s availability because of injuries remains a concern. Philadelphia’s success will depend heavily on keeping its stars healthy. 

Still, the move makes sense. James does not have to be the best player in Philadelphia. He simply has to complement the talent already there.

For a player looking for another championship and a franchise trying to get over the hump, that could make Philadelphia the right place for the final chapter of James’ career.
