Editorial: Issues with Air Conditioning on Campus

Recently, students at VSU have noticed that some of the buildings on campus have been having some issues with air conditioning. Last semester, Hopper Hall had AC issues that took weeks to fix, and now some of the other buildings have been having issues as well.

It’s gotten hot in major buildings, like West Hall and Bailey Science Center, and even Odum Library wasn’t safe. Even our own Spectator office hasn’t had AC since the semester started with no end in sight. The main area people were feeling it recently was Palms Dining Hall, where most on-campus residents frequent.

Palms Dining Hall lacking AC was noticeable to many students because not only did you have to sit in a hot room full of people just to eat, but some of the food that was supposed to be cold was affected by the heat of the building.

Students and faculty were vocal with their concerns and yet it still took them at least a week to fix it, finally making the area comfortable to exist in again.

This calls into question: what are we paying for? We spend all this money to take classes here and be comfortable in this environment, and yet VSU still can’t be on top of air conditioning outages, having us suffer through the August and September heat. This is something that they should easily have the money to fix fast, especially with the large freshmen class that came this semester.

Are they letting the buildings get more run down even though they have gotten more students each year since Fall 2023? After the AC issue in Hopper last semester, the school should be more prepared than ever to handle something like this.

They should either use our tuition for our benefit or lower the tuition entirely.
