Back on the Court: Blazers Begin Their Season

By Tahmira Fryson, Sports Reporter

As the season opener nears, the VSU men’s basketball team is putting the final adjustments on their game plan.

The Blazers will hit the hardwood on Nov. 9 at The Complex against Thomas University.

Valdosta State men’s basketball enters into the oncoming game after going 18-11 overall in the 2025-26 campaign.

Last season, the Blazers finished with a 13-9 record in the Gulf South Conference play and earned a support in the conference tournament. However, they lost their quarterfinal match to the University of Alabama in Huntsville.

Still, the team returns with thirteen players ready to take on the action and bring the heat.

Senior standout Blaise Wallace enters the matchup averaging 13.9 points and 9.3 rebounds per game as one of the only two returning players on the roster.

On the defensive end, he also contributed 32 steals and 13 blocks while recording 47 assists throughout the season.

In addition to his on-court success, Wallace was named Gulf South Conference Player of the Week on Feb. 26 and earned a spot on the NABC Honors Court for his academic achievements.

Junior transfer guard Jovan Palavra joins the team after a two-year career at Palm Beach College.

He helped guide Palm Beach State to a 3-33 record, in which he started all 68 games, averaging 10 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 2.0 steals per game.

Palavra was named the FCSAA Tournament MVP, earned two All-Conference selections, and was twice named FCSAA Player of the Week.

Coach Mike Helfer is entering his 22nd season and is one of the most respected coaches in NCAA Division II basketball.

Helfer has recorded more than 590 collegiate victories throughout his coaching career. Under his leadership, the Blazers have secured seven GSC Regular Season Championships, captured the 2021 GSC Tournament Championship and made nine NCAA Tournament appearances.

With significant roster changes from previous seasons, Helfer’s guard rotation will depend on a combination of defensive versatility, length and incoming talent. The Blazers will also emphasize quick rotations and strong communication, allowing players to work together effectively on both ends of the court.

Blazer fans, get ready to bring the energy! Join us Monday, Nov. 9, at 7 p.m. inside The Complex as the Blazers tip off their new season with a White Out game. Wear white and show your Blazer pride!
