Valdosta State University is proud to announce the 2025 induction class into its Hall of Fame during a special ceremony and brunch on Saturday, January 25, 2025, at 10:00 AM. The event took place in the Student Ballrooms and honored eight exceptional individuals and one championship team who have made significant contributions to VSU’s athletic legacy.
This year’s inductees are:
Pat and Ron Bezona are longtime supporters of VSU Athletics, the Bezona family has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to enhancing the university’s programs, both through their charitable contributions and active involvement in different initiatives.
Caitlyn Calhoun is a standout in women’s softball, Caitlyn’s record-breaking career helped elevate the program to new heights, with numerous accolades and a legacy of leadership both on and off the field. She broke the VSU record with six no-hitters, 33 career shutouts and 574 career strikeouts.
Calhoun praised her teammates for always being there when she needed them.
“They invited me for holidays when I couldn’t get home because it was 700 miles away; they even caught all my bullpens whether they wanted to or not.“
Mike Crain – Nicknamed “The Falcon Killer” – was a key player in the 2003-2007 Men’s Basketball Team, Mike’s athletic excellence and determination were instrumental in building the foundation for the Blazers’ success throughout his career.
Crain reminisced on how he came to the decision that VSU was the place for him.
“The coach took me and a couple guys to Wild Adventures, left there, had a nice lunch, and went to CJ’s Pub and Pool, left there had a nice dinner and the guys took me to a VSU party that night.”
Crain contributed his decision to attend VSU based on this day and some of the “best Dip n Dots” he ever had.
Brittany Ferguson Bell was an important person on VSU’s Women’s Basketball Team, Brittany set records and earned national recognition for her athletic ability, becoming a role model for future student-athletes. In just two years. She played in 57 games with 54 starts and scoring 820 points with 484 rebounds.
Ferguson Bell is big on community and elaborated on how being an athlete is not just about being on the court but about “marrying court and community.”
She emphasized how important it is to not only be involved on the court but also with your community.
Stanley Flanders – Nicknamed “Flash” and known for his performance on the gridiron, Stanley’s leadership and work ethic helped guide the team to new heights, earning him a place in VSU’s athletic history. His 20 receiving touchdowns places him as second all-time in VSU history.
June Munford is a first baseman in men’s baseball, June’s impact on the outfield have earned him a well-deserved spot in the Hall of Fame. He tallied a total of 57 hits, 13 doubles, two triples, six home runs, and 48 driven in.
Gary Slayton was a driving force from the 70’s behind the success of VSU’s cross country team. During the ceremony he decided to take the audience back to the 70s and what it meant to be a Blazer back then.
The 2018 D2 Championship Football Team is, for now, the pinnacle of Blazer football, this team achieved greatness with their historic NCAA Division II National Championship victory, securing a spot in the hearts and memories of VSU alumni, students, and fans alike.
Their record was 14-0 and they accumulated a total of 7,334 yards, 728 points, and 97 touchdowns.
The brunch featured remarks from VSU President, Dr. Richard A. Carvajal, and Athletic Director, Herb Reinhard, as well as speeches from the inductees themselves. Each inductee shared a personal reflection on their journey, their connection to Valdosta State, and the impact that their time at VSU has had on their lives.
