The VSU women’s soccer team kicked off their spring season, gearing up for their first match on Feb. 22, against South Georgia State College. The Lady Blazers are entering this preparative period with renewed energy and new talent, ready to face the challenges that lie ahead.
The Lady Blazers’ spring schedule is designed to test the team’s mental toughness and prepare them for the challenges of the fall season. The Gulf South Conference, in which VSU competes, is known for its competitive nature, and the spring games will serve as valuable experience for the team.
“In the spring we work hard, but it prepares us for the fall so much. We lift three times a week and practice around three times a week as well. In the spring season, we focus on what we need to work on, in the weight room as well as on the field,” said senior defender Katherine Kimmel.
As the team gears up for their opener, the energy between experienced seniors and fresh talent will be crucial in determining their success this season.
“Soccer in the spring is a time for everyone to individually improve. With that being said, I look forward to improving my fitness and first touch. I am also excited for our team to get closer because it is off-season and everyone is less stressed,” said junior forward Kayleigh Kearns.
As the Blazers look to build momentum and chemistry during the spring season, players like Kearns and Kimmel are embracing the opportunity for individual and collective growth.
“On the field, we will work on our building from the back, as well as our decision-making in the final third. The spring season is always a grind, but it is so worth it in the end,” said Kimmel.
The Valdosta State University women’s soccer team faced a challenging fall 2024 season, holding an 8-7-3 overall record and 5-4-3 conference record as of Nov. 10. Despite tough losses, the team showed resilience, particularly in a 2-1 defeat against Auburn Montgomery. Senior Molly Wooldridge emerged as a key player, scoring her third goal of the season in that game.
The Lady Blazers demonstrated strong offensive efforts throughout the season, often outshooting their opponents. As the season progressed, the team focused on building experience and improving their performance in the competitive Gulf South Conference.
Looking at the new team’s composition, the Lady Blazers have a mix of experience and fresh talent. Eight seniors are departing from the team and are welcoming new experiences to help them with their future careers.
As the VSU women’s soccer team embraces the challenges of their spring season, the focus on individual improvement and team cohesion sets a promising foundation for their fall season.
