Greeks donate to multiple charities

VSU’s Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Inc. hosted “Be an Angel Week” in the Student Union Sept. 26 through 29.

“The purpose of ‘Be an Angel Week’ is to help promote awareness to the students on campus about the needs of others and how they can help,” Niquisheila Hall, senior biology major and member of Sigma Gamma Rho Inc., said.

The ladies of Sigma Gamma Rho along with members of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc., Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc., Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc., Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Inc., and Iota Phi Theta Fraternity Inc., sponsored a different event for the different days of the week.

“I think it had a great impact on the students as well as how they look at Greek Life,” J. Kameron Farrow, a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. said. “‘Be an Angel Week’ showed that we really care and are willing to give to the community.”

Monday the organizations asked faculty and students to donate unwanted clothes, which were then given to the Lamp Shelter.

On Tuesday, the organizations collected shoes for Soles for Little Souls in Douglas, Ga.

There was a canned good drive on Wednesday, during which faculty and students donated food that was then sent to the Haven Women’s Shelter.

On Thursday, the organizations held a school supply drive. All the supplies collected were donated to local elementary schools.

Each day members from the various organizations were set up in the Student Union ready to collect donations.

“Students and faculty greatly supported the event by showing up and donating various supplies on each day,” Hall said. “We had a wonderful turnout.”

“I think the clothes drive was probably the most successful because students have clothes they aren’t wearing just lying around,” Farrow said.

Hall encourages students to continue to donate items even though “Be an Angel Week” is over.

“All you have to do is contact the organization or group you would like to donate to and they would happily receive your donation,” Hall said.
