Blazers hosts Warriors this weekend

Valdosta State baseball team (6-2) welcomes Wayne State University to Billy Grant Field this weekend for a four-game series.

The Warriors are making the cross-country trip from Detroit, Mich.  for their season opener.

Due to weather delays, the Blazers have not a played a game since Feb. 10.

“We have had so many rain-outs lately that we need to play,” Greg Guilliams, head coach of the Blazers, said. “Hopefully we will get the games in.”

According to Guilliams, the Blazers were able to scrimmage within the team this past weekend.

“It’s disappointing when you have that much time off, but you deal with it,” Guilliams said.

WSU is looking to start its season off right.

After a second place finish in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, the Warriors are a preseason pick to finish in the same spot this year.

The Warriors are returning 18 letterwinners from last season.

With a late start to the season, the Warriors will be playing a lot of games in a short period of time.

WSU is looking to its veteran pitching staff to be the team’s foundation this year.

The pitching staff consists of two seniors at the top of the rotation, a junior in the middle and a freshman rounding off the rotation.

“They will have their pitching lined up exactly how they want it,” Guilliams said. “I’m sure we will see their top guys.”

Guilliams is not too worried about the challenge on the mound.

“The good thing is we still have plenty of fresh pitchers,” Guilliams said. “Offensively, we will come out and see how we swing the bats and see what we learned from [Wednesday’s win] it.”

This weekend’s action begins on Friday with a double header at 7 p.m. and continues into Saturday and Sunday.
