Blazers dwarf the Choctaws in a Homecoming win 35-10

The third-ranked VSU Blazers triumphantly returned to Bazemore Hyder Stadium to defeat the Mississippi College Choctaws, 35-10.

Despite the Choctaws rushing for 223 yards in the game, the Blazers held the Choctaws’ offense in check by allowing only 38 passing yards and forcing two turnovers, an interception and a forced fumble in the win.

The Blazers’ offense was efficient as usual, as senior quarterback Sammy Edwards completed 20 out of 30 passes for 289 yards and four passing touchdowns. Nine different players caught passes from Edwards on the day, but the biggest contributor on the receiving end was graduate student wide receiver Tyler Algero, who had four catches for 67 yards and two touchdowns.

This game marked the Blazers’ first home game since Hurricane Helene. Head Coach Tremaine Jackson praised his team’s resolve during the extended road trip and how nice it is to be home.

“I was worried that when the bus came they were here to take someone else outside of Valdosta, but I was thankful we were back home to sleep in our own bed, said coach Jackson.

The Blazers will go on their scheduled bye week next week. Jackson spoke about how important bye week is.

“We don’t get to sit on a loss for two weeks and we get a chance to rest and nurse our injuries so that we can return stronger when we return,” he said.

The Blazers are 7-0 on the season for the ninth time in school history and will return to Bazemore Hyder Stadium on Nov.2 to face the Chowan Hawks. Meanwhile, the Choctaws fell to 0-7 on the season as they take on the Erskine Flying Fleet next Saturday, Oct.26.
