By wearing pink today, faculty, staff, and students can help the members of Zeta Tau Alpha paint the campus pink in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
ZTA will have a booth on the pedestrian mall between Nevins and West Halls. Information about breast cancer can be obtained at the booth, and with a $1 donation, students, faculty, and staff can put the name of a loved one on a list in memory and in honor of those who have had breast cancer.
Members of the sorority will host several different events throughout the month of October to honor their philanthropy, breast cancer awareness and education. These events include Big Man on Campus, a 5K run, and the pink out football game, with all proceeds going towards breast cancer research.
In addition to these events, sorority members will collect Yoplait yogurt lids to help raise money for the cure.
“For each lid collected, Yoplait donates 10 cents to the Susan G. Komen foundation,” ZTA philanthropy chair Holli Thompson said.
Boxes for lids will be placed at local businesses and on campus for those who wish to participate.
New this year for ZTA’s breast cancer program is the Think Pink 5K. It will take place Oct. 24 on main campus, with registration beginning at 7 a.m. and the race starting at 8 a.m. The registration fee of $20 will include a free t-shirt, and after Oct. 14, registration goes up to $25.
The Big Man on Campus pageant will take place Oct. 15 at 7 p.m. in Mathis Auditorium. ZTA members raise money for their philanthropy through this event by selling ads and charging admission. Pageant admission of $5 or $3 plus five Yoplait lids will go towards ZTA’s contribution towards breast cancer education and research.
“We have already raised $4,600 just from ads and donations from local businesses,” ZTA member Scarlett Taylor said.
The pink out football game will take place on Nov. 7, the last home game of the season against Edward Waters. Fans are encouraged to wear pink to the game, where ZTA members will hand out shirts and ribbons for breast cancer awareness.
