It’s a brand new football season here at VSU and the talent on the field is buzzworthy as new players take the field.
New and old players alike are hitting the field hard yet these players have one goal in mind, as quarterback Brett Whitmire stated, “The National Championship, baby.”
Whitmire is entering his redshirt freshman year. On and off the field, team members say that Whitmire contributes a sense of consistency and drive that can be compared to some of football’s legends.
The player that Whitmore said he aims to most emulate in style and technique is Vikings quarterback, Brett Favre.
Whitmire, although a lifetime fan of Favre, said that his true inspiration in the game came from his dad, Brian Whitmire.
“He ultimately taught me the game, and for that, I owe him a lot.”
Wide Receiver Tyler Rose, a first year player, said he believes his team can make it to the National Championship through hard work and dedication.
“The Blazers know the amount of time, energy, and effort that we have to put in this year. We are ready. Every guy on this field wants this championship.”
When asked what obstacle the Blazers have encountered so far, Rose said, “The heat. You get mentally ready, then you step out on to the field in your gear and it’s physically exhausting, but if you want to be the best, I guess this is the price you pay. No pain, no gain.”
Newcomer, quarterback Will Johnson, said he is excited to be a part of the Blazer family.
“I have such a wonderful opportunity presented to me. You know, my dream has always been to make it to the NFL, but the coaches here at VSU have made such an impact on me personally that being a college football coach is also a goal I am working towards.”
Johnson said that although there are many aspects of the game that can be difficult for him, learning a brand new offense is the most challenging.
