Vegetarians have always had to adapt at restaurants or eateries trying to find a dish that fits their appetite.
Finding meals while being a vegetarian student at VSU is no different.
Becca Schilling is a third year psychology major who has not been eating meat since she was 18.
Although she no longer eats on campus often, mostly preparing her meals from home, she admitted it was fairly easy to find meat-less meals on campus, especially at the dining center in Hopper Hall.
“I really liked the salads at Hopper, and they would have fruit and omelets as well,” Schilling said.
Palms Dining Center and Hopper Hall offer a multitude of vegetarian meals on a daily basis.
“We do vegetarian dishes every day; it ranges from broccoli and cheddar rice to … spaghetti, there is always something you can get from Palms,” Javarez Ingram, a Palms employee, said.
Although there is typically only one vegetarian dish for lunch and dinner, they offer alternatives.
“You can always come to the international line and we can sauté and steam vegetables,” Ingram said.
Although Schilling primarily eats at home, she finds eat easier now than ever to prepare meals she knows that she likes.
“I’m doing the grocery shopping so I get to experiment and find different things that I like that don’t have meat in them,” Schilling said.
Overall, vegetarian dishes aren’t too terribly hard to find, so long as you do not get a sudden craving to go back to the old, meat eating ways.
“I’ve only had a few urges to eat meat, but it wasn’t for a specific type of meat or anything,” Schilling said. “I feel like it was just me mainly craving protein at the time.”
“I also got food poisoning from chicken which reinforced the idea of not eating meat,” she said.
