Weight loss opportunities: something for everyone

For some, fitness is an opportunity, for many others, fitness is a way of life.
At VSU, effective fitness opportunities are considered and offered in various areas of campus life.
The Student Recreation Center offers free consulting as well as activities such as kickboxing, zumba, pilates classes, circuit training, and weight lifting.
Students feel the benefits of working up a good sweat.
“It makes me feel like I’m taking care of myself, so it makes my day a little better,” Ashley Hobbs, senior psychology major, said.
No one has to feel awkward exercising alone.
“Students should come because it’s a great place to meet new people while busting a sweat,” Taylor Burgess, junior exercise physiology major, said.
The Recreation Center also offers various intramural activities for students.
“There’s something for everybody here,” Kelly Fournier, junior psychology major, said. “Swimming, basketball, or weight lifting are some of the popular activities that students enjoy in their free time.”
The recreation center isn’t the only way to actively manage or lose weight in the midst of busy campus life.
Both Palms and Hopper dining centers offer a variety of vegetable platters amongst both the pizza and deli lines.
Hopper’s local and organic market has a variety of yogurts, salsas, milks, and other fresh products.
“This is beneficial for those that watch their calorie intake and love organic freshly cooked foods, it makes it easier”, Diane Decoursey, Hopper Dining staff worker said.
Campus Wellness offers another weight loss option, a 12 week Weight Watchers program. This program can be started at any time and is open to faculty, staff, and students.
Meeting time availabilities include Tuesdays at 7:30 a.m. and Wednesday at 1 p.m. So bring a friend and start on your path to fitness.
The prices range from $144 to $186 depending on the number of weeks enrolled and other factors. Payments can be made at the meeting by check, cash, or credit card.
