Whites are oppressed.
According to a CNN article “Are whites racially oppressed?” that is what some of them think.
Caucasians are freaking out because they are losing their slot of superiority, calling themselves the new “minority group.”
As a white female, I have to say, “So what?” I am tired of one race feeling more dominant than another. There has always been too much focus on this factor.
In our American melting pot, we can’t keep thinking in hierarchal terms. The white population becoming less dominant is proof of the ever-changing national population. This change inflicts fear into those who are in a bubble they don’t want popped. Well, I suggest you find somewhere else to live, if that’s your attitude. America will keep changing no matter what your comfort zone is.
Tom Wise, author of “White Like Me,” said in the article that whites are flustered by the recession, feeling insecure at their unavoidable financial failure.
“For the first time since the Great Depression, white Americans have been confronted with a level of economic insecurity that we’re not used to,” Wise said. “It’s not so new for black and brown folks, but for white folks, this is something we haven’t seen since the Depression.”
The anxious Caucasians need to step back and realize that they are not the only ones suffering. Everyone has been affected by the recession, whether it is through job losses, pay cuts, gas prices or grocery bills. I understand this might be a psychologically trying time for those who are used to the idea of “white superiority,” but during the low points, remember America will pull through; you will pull through. Just stay calm if you don’t come out back on top.
Our nation is constantly transforming. Look at who our president is. More interracial couples are forming, Mona Charen, a National Review columnist, said in CNN’s article.
Diversity surges through popular culture, with channels such as BET and shows such as “The George Lopez Show.”
“The very definition of being an American is going through a profound change,” Wise said. “We can no longer take it for granted that we (whites) are the dictionary definition of an American.”
We should focus on racial equality, not majority and minority. Every American citizen holds the same constitutional rights; you are no better than any other person. If the population of one race statistically overweighs another, oh well. This should not empower anyone in wanting to dominate. At the end of the day, we are all Americans.
In my opinion this article is being upserd. Whites being the new “minority” as it was put in this article is just a way to bring a new view on racism. Every race has a minority since the being of time, not every caucasian race was well off. I’ve personally read Mr. Wise book, and his opinion is his opinion. As an African American, let me apologize for the hard shift your race is facing. Sorry as you states “We can no longer take it for granted that we (whites) are the dictionary definition of an American.” America was not founded on one specific race, or the caucasian race. The world is changing and with it comes the good and the bad. One race should not feel sorry for the other, this is 2010, if you do not like your situation do something about it, make a change. Dont expect the world to start feeling sorry for you.
