Satterfield named Pitcher of the Week; games postponed

The VSU softball team had a busy weekend scheduled against North Alabama and West Alabama, but they also got an unwanted visit from the rain.

Inclement weather conditions forced the Blazers to reschedule two of the four games over the weekend; VSU won both despite the weather.

Holly Satterfield also racked up another Gulf South Conference Pitcher of the Week Award.

Satterfield started both games over the weekend and she went nearly unscathed.  In total, Satterfield pitched 13.2 innings, giving up only one run. She now has the lowest ERA in the GSC at 0.64.   Opposing batters are hitting .193 against Satterfield, which is the lowest batting average against GSC pitchers.

“She pitched well,” head coach Thomas Macera said.  “She didn’t give up an earned run. She gave up some hits and pitchers are going to give up hits, there’s no doubt about that. We’ve got to play defense and we did.  She got out of trouble when she needed to.”

Holly Satterfield isn’t the only one having success on the mound. As a pitching staff, VSU has only given up one homer on the season. The staff has the lowest ERA in the conference, with a 1.18.

“Holly has improved every year she has been here,” Macera said.  “She’s improved over the last three years; she’s improved this year over last year. She just hits her spots well and gets the ground balls you need. We’ve only given up one home run all year. That’s the thing; they just hit their spots like they’re supposed to.”

After dealing with a couple of injuries, the Blazers finally returned everyone to the lineup. According to the stats, pitching is carrying the club right now, but the offense is definitely doing its part to score enough runs to win games.

“We had everybody back this past weekend,” Macera said.  “We still didn’t hit the ball real well, but we’re not hitting the ball well as a team right now.  We’re hitting good enough to win, so I won’t take that away from them. We’re manufacturing runs when we need to.”

The Lady Blazers were scheduled to face Albany State, but due to weather conditions, the game has been cancelled. The only other change for the upcoming weekend will be on Sunday, as the game against Young Harris has been moved up to 1 p.m.
