TOMs raise awareness

You may not think about it, but there is one thing you put on everyday without a second thought, shoes.

Imagine a world without shoes. No Nikes, no Reeboks, no nothing.

Now, imagine a world where you can help, by going one day a year barefoot.

Not everyone has the opportunity to own a pair of shoes, but, according to the quickly growing company named TOMs, everyone should.

The company believes that everyone should own a pair of shoes. Despite location or income, people need shoes. Every time you buy a pair of shoes from TOMs, a free pair is given to a child in need.

Tuesday happened to be TOMs annual “One Day Without Shoes” fundraiser, which many participated in around the world and even here on campus. So if you saw a lot of barefooted college students, that’s why.

I think this is a great way to raise awareness; a lot of children around the world go without shoes every day, making their everyday walk of life harder than it should be. Plus with all the diseases that exist like hookworms and tetanus, it is dangerous to walk around without shoes.

This is why we should be grateful for having shoes. We don’t have to risk disease or worry about cold.

There is a way to help fix this problem. You can buy from TOMs to help the children in need. You can help out locally by giving your old shoes to Good Will or the Salvation Army, that way those that cannot afford new shoes can at least have a good pair. You can even participate next year in TOMs “One Day Without Shoes.”

Though the thought of walking around barefoot may seem nasty to some, it could mean the world to others.
