The Tunnel sheds light on serious social problems

Tuesday night was a happening night inside the University Center as attendees entered The Tunnel, an event held to illustrate various types of oppression.

Over 100 colleges in the nation have participated in the event, and it has become popular throughout universities, such as Pennsylvania State University and University of Montana.

The event began as the tour guides led small groups into various, dark rooms while using flashlights.

Each room served as a tunnel that displayed different ways in which people suffer from abuse.

When the lights turned on, it was a surprise as to what was about to happen.

Each room contained numerous examples of oppression such as sex trafficking and racism.

Upon walking into one tunnel, a short movie clip was shown to explain the exploitation of children.

Along with the corruption of children, topics such as poverty and gay rights were illustrated as well.

After the tour came to an end, the tour guides led each group into a discussion room.

In this discussion room, small groups were able to talk about what they saw in each tunnel and how it made them feel.

“It was such a moving experience. It made me stop and think about the sadness of oppression. I recommend anyone to go on the tour,” sophomore Nicole Zent, said.

Also, during the conclusion of this event, there was also a drawing station that allowed people to get their feelings emotions out on paper.

Counseling was made available and booths were set up to offer more information about oppression.

Volunteer opportunities were also available to support organizations against oppression such as the Gay-Straight Alliance and the Battered Women Organization.
