After being on the road for over a month, the VSU volleyball team returned to its friendly confines on Tuesday night when it came away with a three set to one victory over the West Alabama Tigers.
“It’s great to be back home,” Head Coach Mike Swan said after the match. “We needed it so bad to be here. We just have to keep getting better”
West Alabama entered the contest 9-12 and on a two-game losing streak.
The teams split the opening games with VSU taking a close first one 25-20 and West Alabama taking a more lopsided game two with a score of 25-18.
The second half proved to be interesting for VSU.
Although they took both games, in each of them they allowed large margins to be cut down quickly.
In game three VSU held a 20-13 lead and surrendered a six-point run to cut the margin to just one point. Likewise in game four VSU held a 20-14 lead and had it cut down to a four-point game at 23-19.
“We just have to learn how to put teams away,” Swan said.
Standouts from Tuesday’s match include Destiny Berry who finished with a .667 hitting percentage, Jessica Codato who posted 43 assists and 11 digs and Ashley Lala also added 11 assists and 8 digs.
The team as a whole recorded a .278 hitting percentage with 59 assists and 62 digs.
The next home game will be Saturday, Nov. 9 against conference foe West Georgia. The match will be the first of four home matches which will conclude volleyball’s regular season.
