Gulf South Conference weekend sweep

It was a Gulf South Conference weekend sweep at the Billy Grant field for blazer baseball.

The team went three for three against No. 9 University of West Florida Argonauts. A double-header on Saturday left the blazers with a 9-4 win in the first game and a 2-1 victory in the second. Sundays match up finished the blazers burn down with a 12-6 win.

It was a series full of home runs for VSU with a total of eight. Three from senior right fielder, Kevin Cruz. Two homers for infielder Jayk Graham and single homers for Michael Gouge, Hayden Jones, and Bryant Hayman.

In game one the Blazers started out with the lead and held onto it until the top of the fifth but quickly regained the lead in the bottom of the eighth after bombing three home runs.

Mitchell Cody pitched 7 innings for the blazers in game one and was relieved by Kellan Bailey who moved got the winning moving his record to 1-0.

VSU got on the scoreboard first in the second game as well when B.J Harmon walked in the bottom of the third and came around to third when Mike Reed singled. A throwing error to third on the play allowed Harmon to come home for a 1-0 VSU lead.

UWF took advantage of a blazer error in the the fifth inning and got on board tying the game at 1-1.

The game went scoreless until the for the next three inning until Zac Goodno 0-1 pitch to left field for the winning run.

Game two starter Kyle Andre took the blazers to inning nine when Jones came into finish off the win.

Game three on Sunday was another home run derby for the blazers when Jones started out with a grand slam and was followed by yet another roundtrip per by Cruz and another by Hayman.

Cruz was 5-for-5 to lead Valdosta State at the plate on the day.

Austin Glorius improved his pitching record for the season to 1-0 and pitched the blazers through their third win in the GSC series.

VSU baseball will return to action in Wednesday with the first pitch at 5 p.m. at Billy Grant field against Georgia Southwestern for a non conference game.
