VSU student joins Hairspray national tour cast

Valdosta State University’s theatre department has gained a new success story: Kalab Quinn, a senior performance major, has joined the Hairspray National Tour cast.

“Hairspray” follows the story of Tracy, a teen girl, and her chance to rise to stardom in the 1960s. Tracy navigates the socio-political scene of the time, and uses her fame to integrate her school.

Quinn was cast as Duane, a student dancer attempting to integrate “The Corny Collins Show” alongside Tracy.

“I saw the audition posted on playbill.com and I submitted independently, which was followed by virtual callbacks where I was in further communication with casting,” Quinn said when asked how he got the opportunity to join the cast.

The tour will take the cast and crew through the United States and Canada, with stops in places such as New York, California, Texas, and Alberta.

“I feel so blessed,” Quinn said. “I definitely dreamt of this opportunity for a long time and now that it’s a reality I feel very accomplished.”

Some notable theatre alumni from VSU include writer and executive producer Debra Fordham, choreographer David Rossetti, and actress Heather Roop.

“For theatre majors just starting out, I encourage you to go the extra mile.” Quinn said. “When you feel like giving up, keep going. You are more than capable of achieving your goals. ”
