On Tuesday, the VSU counseling suite hosted the “Family Matters Counseling Event.” This event was based on helping students who are dealing with family issues back at home.
Many students were able to attend this event and learn different ways to cope through navigating family drama.
This event discussed important topics and views dealing with the pressures of family drama while being in college, which allowed students a place to state their opinions and morals in certain circumstances.
The event was mainly focused on students finding support within peers and learning to set boundaries within family relationships. Also, this event explained family dynamics and different ways to build back up positive relationships.
Clinical Mental Health Counseling graduate student Stephania Couto, went into more detail about the event.
“I’ve had the opportunity to observe numerous intake sessions gathering information about student’s presenting concerns and relevant background details, ” said Couto. “Through these sessions, we see patterns and common struggles among students, especially around navigating complex family relationships.”
Couto also explained the importance of having deep conversations about navigating family relationships.
“Family relationships are foundational and can significantly impact every aspect of a person’s life, from emotional well-being to academic performance,” said Couto. “Discussing these relationships in a structured, supportive environment helps students process their feelings, reflect on their experiences and gain insight into handling family conflicts in healthy ways.”
Couto clarified the main goals that she wanted students to achieve out of the Family Matters Event and gives encouragement to students going through family issues.
“Our primary goal is for students to walk away feeling more empowered in their family interactions. Also, we want them to leave with a deeper understanding of family roles, and dynamics,” said Couto. “Family issues can be deeply personal and often challenging to address, so it’s essential to approach them with patience and self-compassion.”
