The Valdosta State Blazers men’s basketball team is making waves in the NCAA Division II landscape, climbing to No. 18 in the latest NABC Weekly Coaches Poll released on Tuesday. This marks a one-spot improvement from their previous ranking.
The Blazers’ climb comes amidst significant shifts in the top rankings. VSU’s success is part of a broader trend of strong performances from the South region. The Blazers are one of five teams from the area in the national rankings, joining Nova Southeastern (3rd), Alabama Huntsville (5th), Florida Southern (8th), and Palm Beach Atlantic (23rd).
“Right now, we’re on a 9-game win streak and we’re playing some good team basketball right now. As a team, we’re starting to hit our stride and were starting to show the type of team we can be,” said J.C. Clausi, a graduate student and guard on the team.
The team’s recent success includes two home victories last week, extending their winning streak to seven games. Their determination will be further tested when they return home to host fifth-ranked Alabama Huntsville on Jan. 23, followed by a match against West Alabama on Jan. 25 during Hall of Fame Weekend.
“As a group, we are excited to have an opportunity to go out and show that we have the best group of 15 guys in the country. We’re going for it all, but we got to handle business this week as usual,” said Clausi.
The Blazers have extended their winning streak to nine games. This marks their most impressive run since the 2019-20 season, when they secured a Gulf South Conference Championship appearance. With this latest victory, VSU has strengthened its record to 15-2 overall and stand at 10-1 in conference play.
As the season progresses, all eyes will be on the Blazers to see if they can maintain their momentum and continue their climb in the national rankings.
