Poet C. G. Hanzlicek visits VSU

“I use the world around me as my building blocks.”

Poetry author C. G. Hanzlicek read from his works to students on Wednesday evening in the Student Union Theater as the first poetry circuit reading of the semester. Born in Minnesota, Hanzlicek received a B.A. from the University of Minnesota in 1964 and then an M.F.A. from the Writer’s Workshop at the University of Iowa in 1966. The author of eight book of poetry, including 2013’s The Live of Birds, Hanzlicek has seen his work appear in dozens of anthologies and journals which helped him to win the Robert Payne Award from Columbia University Translation Center in 1985. He recently retired from the California State University in Fresno where he taught for 35 years, mostly as the Director of the Creative Writing Program.  ​
