Daily Strange: A Cat Video A Day Keeps the Negative Away

Written by Jordan Barela, Editor-in-Chief

Most of us are guilty of doing it. You are scrolling through Youtube, watching random videos and in the suggested videos is a cat video. A cute and cuddly feline doing something even more cute and cuddly that someone just had to record. So, you click on it and watch.

Or, you are the type of person that goes to Youtube just to watch cat videos.

Either way, with over two million cat videos on Youtube, a stat measured by ReelSEO.com, you are bound to come across a cat video.

What does the growing presence of these videos suggest?

Jessica Gall Myrick, an assistant professor at Indiana University, wrote an article on theconversation.com, explaining the effect this furry phenomenon has on its viewers.

After launching an online survey, which had around 7,000 participants, Myrick determined the effect of watching cat videos.

According to the results, people who have or have had a cat are more prone to watch staggering amounts of cat videos. However, three quarters of the participants in the survey said that they did not seek the cat content; the users stumbled upon the videos from their daily internet use.

The participants in the survey also stated that they experienced more positive emotions and higher energy levels.

This suggests that cat videos are like virtual coffee; cat videos offer a quick boast of happiness.

By watching a cat do something cute, the viewers had an increase in happiness, with just a simple click.

Cat videos are almost unavoidable.

Whether you are a cat person or not, if you come across a cat video (which you more than likely will), click on it and enjoy.
